A big holiday here in New York. Maybe next year I'll go to see some of the big fireworks. I didn't really want to go out and deal with crowds, so I went and watched Lorna cook and got to taste all kinds of good food:
  • Chicken fried steak, which is steak that is breaded and fried like chicken. Never tried it before--it was delicious!
  • Burgers with all the toppings you can think of, even pickles
  • Potato salad
  • Deviled eggs
  • Macaroni and cheese
  • Watermelon
  • Apple pie
  • Banana cream pie
Wow so much pie...
I helped make the macaroni and cheese and I think I'll try to make it again on my own soon.
Watermelon... seems a lot more popular here. I don't remember eating it a lot as a kid. It's very sweet and very good though. I tried it with salt on the rind like someone said.

I definitely need to learn how to cook things other than ramen and toast! So I'll be at Lorna's cooking classes this summer--see you there if you sign up as well!

You shouldn't eat Southern food made by non-Southerners, it gives you this skewed idea of what Southern food is. Lorna's a good cook and all, but she's not from the South. Her chicken fried steak never comes out right. There's more to cooking something than just the recipe.

I admit I don't know a lot about the South or Southern food. So where should I go to try real Southern food?

The South. And how spicy you like food will determine where in the South you go. If you're staying up here, well, Lord help you trying to find real Southern food. Find a Southerner, get them to like you and then ask them to cook for you. Or go to the South. Those are your options.

XD

Guess I will have to go with option A and find a new BFF (best foods friend?) from the South.

Good luck with that. Just be prepared to maybe be looked at like you talk funny.

I still do not understand why people like deviled eggs.

I guess you don't like them? What's wrong with deviled eggs?

They are boiled eggs with mayonnaise in the yolk. I don't know why this makes them so good. Do you like them?

They have mustard, too, and usually paprika on top! They're not a special favorite or anything, but they're not bad. I mean, look how many dishes are made with something plus mayonnaise or mustard or both, you just toss in some ingredient and add mayo/mustard and voila! You have something ending with the word salad!

But I still don't know why people like them so much. As you said, they're not so special.

People tend to like foods that aren't really special, and I guess deviled eggs are at least a bit different from just potato salad, macaroni salad, or even egg salad. They're served in a totally different way, and you can eat them with your hands. Maybe that's why people like them so much?

Lorna is an excellent teacher and a wonderful chef. She even had success with me as a student in her beginner's cooking class, even if it was not necessarily as much success as had been hoped. Perhaps, if I can find the time, a refresher course might be in order.

I'll be doing cooking this summer, too. Should be good.
